Understanding Albemarle County Releases
A person has left Albemarle County jail custody when ACRJ records an exit, but the word “release” does not always mean a return to the community. Bond, personal recognizance, time served, sentence completion, and a court-ordered discharge can end physical confinement. A transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections, another jail, federal custody, immigration custody, a hospital, or another placement also removes a person from ACRJ. The destination field matters. Death can end a custody listing as well, though it is not a release.
That distinction controls every later search. Albemarle County released inmates who return to the community may have a court order and an ACRJ release entry. A state-responsible person can move from the regional jail to VADOC without becoming free. Someone discharged from prison may still be on probation, parole, or post-release supervision. “Discharge” means an agency has ended the stated custody or supervision status. “Time served” means the court has credited confinement already completed toward the sentence.

Work release and home electronic incarceration need similar care. A person can spend time outside a housing unit while still serving a sentence. Physical absence from a cell is not the same as final discharge. Ask which agency retains legal custody and which record carries the exit status.

A court disposition answers a different question. It proves what a judge ordered, such as dismissal, conviction, bond, probation, revocation, or a sentence. It does not prove the minute ACRJ finished identity checks, property handling, detainer review, and discharge processing. ACRJ identifies its FOIA channel for existing jail records. Written requests can be sent to Theresa Schwab at foiarequests@acrj.org or directed to 160 Peregory Lane, Charlottesville, VA 22902. A request does not need to cite the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, but it should describe an existing record with enough detail to locate the correct episode.
- Give the full name, a distinguishing identifier, and the approximate booking date.
- Ask for the booking and release record, actual exit date and time, disposition, and receiving authority if recorded.
- Request a booking photograph separately if needed because the custodian may review it under different access limits.
- Ask for electronic copies and an advance estimate before costs exceed a stated ceiling.
- If material is withheld or redacted, ask for the precise legal basis and the known custodian of any referred record.
Virginia Code §2.2-3704 generally requires an initial response within five working days and permits defined extensions. Reasonable charges can reflect actual search, access, duplication, and supply costs. ACRJ publishes no fixed release-record fee. If the estimate exceeds $200, a deposit may be required. The deadline governs the response process, not an unconditional production date.
Albemarle Release Record Retention
Government retention outlasts any short-lived online display. The Library of Virginia’s GS-08 schedule lists cumulative local and regional jail booking and release records for 20 years after separation. It lists inmate incarceration records, including booking sheets, photographs, pretrial-release material, and parole notices, for three years after separation. Those periods guide preservation. Albemarle’s official jail-utilization report counted 1,275 release events involving 1,002 distinct Albemarle-responsible people in 2024. It classified 728 as bond or pretrial-services events and 336 as sentence-served or time-served events. The reported average stay was 31.2 days. Eighty percent of bond and pretrial releases involved stays of three days or less, which helps explain why same-day and three-day searches matter even though ACRJ has no public rolling release feed.
These figures require care. They cover Albemarle-responsible people, not every release from the three-jurisdiction regional jail. The categories include transfers and other exits that are not community returns. The report also avoids inflating ordinary counts from repeated weekender check-ins by using the initial booking and final sentence-end release. A statistical “release event” should never replace a person-specific record.

The search should move across systems in a set order. ACRJ’s own website does not host a name roster or an archive of recent releases. It sends its Inmate Locator link to Virginia Jail VINE. VADOC says the locator is updated daily but warns that information can be inaccurate or outdated. Compare identifiers, preserve the exact result labels, and obtain a release or discharge record when durable proof is needed. The search screen is a state-responsible route. Someone who had only a local ACRJ booking may never appear there.
When Albemarle Release Orders Arrive
ACRJ states that it cannot execute release until actual orders arrive from every involved court, and transmission can take several days. A web docket may therefore show bond, dismissal, or time served before the jail has completed the physical release. A second case, detainer, pending charge, or missing order can also keep a person in custody after one favorable ruling.

Albemarle Release Property Questions
ACRJ requires a completed Inmate Property Release Form before money or property can be handed to a named designee. The recipient must be the person listed and must sign for the property. That posted process concerns a designee while someone is confined. The official page does not publish a final-discharge property window, exit location, or rule for abandoned items.
A former inmate with unresolved property should contact ACRJ and identify the booking episode. The ACRJ property page names Sgt. Scott Saberg at extension 235 for the documented process. Do not assume that the designee form, a pickup deadline, or a particular lobby procedure applies after final release unless the jail confirms it.
Albemarle Release Notification Systems
Virginia uses separate notification tracks. Virginia Jail VINE serves participating local and regional jails such as ACRJ. It allows a person-specific search and, when offered, phone, text, email, TTY, or app alerts. VADOC’s NAAVI program covers eligible victims and certain family members for state-prison events. Registry notifications are separate again. A transfer from ACRJ to VADOC can require a new registration.

An ICE detainer is a request or notice, not proof that ICE completed a pickup. ACRJ’s historical document center distinguishes people with ICE-filed detainers who were not taken into ICE custody. Historical local reporting also described a community release followed by a separate ICE arrest. Neither source establishes current policy for an individual case.
After someone disappears from ACRJ, search the ICE Online Detainee Locator independently when immigration custody is a realistic possibility. A local criminal release and an immigration release are separate events. If ICE has the person, the ACRJ exit was a change of custodian rather than proof of freedom. If no ICE match appears, contact the responsible office or counsel because the locator can omit or delay records.
ACRJ Release System History
ACRJ opened in 1974 after Albemarle County and Charlottesville combined their older separate jail operations. The facility took its current name in 1996, and Nelson County is now a third member jurisdiction. That regional identity explains why a person physically held on Peregory Lane may have an Albemarle, Charlottesville, Nelson, state, or federal legal track.

When sources conflict, give each record the job it is designed to do. The court controls the legal order. ACRJ records its own exit. A receiving agency proves later custody. VINE is an alert feed, while VADOC warns that its daily data can be stale. Note the date and time of every live check.
Albemarle Release Facilities and Systems
Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail is the main adult local facility. Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention is separate and has no public adult-style lookup because juvenile matters are confidential. No adult VADOC prison, BOP institution, or ICE detention center was identified inside Albemarle County in the reviewed official directories.
Location does not limit the search. The Virginia Department of Corrections can hold Albemarle-sentenced people anywhere in the state, and VADOC District 9 supervises qualifying people in the community.
